Brief Book Brief
Turn the Ship Around!: A True Story of Turning Followers into Leaders – By: L. David Marquet
Luckily for everyone involved I will never be at the helm of a billion dollar machine of potential destruction at levels hard to fathom. If you lead a large organization, the book is clearly marketed your direction and to some degree is focused there. For us regular grunts however, it seemed an interesting challenge in helping people find and ignite their own leadership and growth, even if it only ever spreads out to their own lives. I suppose it should be funny how often we in the “empowerment biz” direct the experience of others. Less funny that we are often not helping them find ways to direct their own. Made me think. Stupid book : ) Have used some of the simply creative shifts in concepts of intentionality building trust by shifting authority to where the information is…a good reminder for counselor boy.
Some quotes from the book:
“Leadership is communicating to people their worth and potential so clearly that they are inspired to see it in themselves.”
“One of the things that limits our learning is our belief that we already know something.”
