Brief Book Brief

It Worked for Me – By: Colin Powell

Politics. Fills me with unpleasant thoughts and words. Something about Powell always seemed thoughtful and even. Maybe even Balanced (see what I did there). Whether it was a planned narrative or reality, I have no clue. I thought he should have been president at some point and felt that was confirmed when (in a most political way) he said you would never catch me behind that desk. His personality and take on things seemed a functional blend of military ability to organize and break things and the softer negotiations of affairs of state and making more right than wrong decisions in any realm. How to treat people and get things done. How to lead and create new leaders. How to eat surf ‘n turf and how to eat crow. Pretty good tome for Balance Better.

Some quotes from the book:

“Fear and failure are always present. Accept them as part of life and learn how to manage these realities. Be scared, but keep going. Being scared is usually transient. It will pass. If you fail, fix the causes and keep going.”

“No matter how significant or life-changing your greatest hit or miss might be, neither even begins to define who you are. Each of us is a product of all our experiences and all our interactions with other people. To cite calculus, we are the area under the curve.”

“Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment.”

“The most influential people in my life will never show up on a Google search.”
